FAQs about Workshops/Retreats
Can I schedule a custom workshop/retreat for my faith community?
Yes. I am happy to write custom workshops for a group. Please make sure to provide at least three months of lead time for me to prepare. Call me at 24-335-5652, or email at [email protected] to inquire.
Do you provide overnight or weekend retreats?
I have facilitated many such retreats, and would be happy to put one together for your group. However, due to the overhead of scheduling retreat facilities, and the more intimate nature of such retreats, I do not open group workshops to the public. Please call or email me if you are interested.
How many people will be there?
The number of attendees varies by event, however in general workshops are less than 15 people.
What’s for lunch?
Typically sandwiches, chips, cookies, fruit and vegetables. Dietary restrictions will be accomodated.
Do you provide youth retreats?
I’ve done several workshops with you, and would be happy to work with you to design something for your community of youth in middle school and/or high school.
Will you work with leadership teams?
I would be happy to work with leadership teams as you discern God’s will for mission and goals, or simply to explore spiritual practices of church leadership teams. Please call or email me.
FAQs about Spiritual Direction
How do I get started with spiritual direction?
The best thing to do is simply schedule a “meet me” session by choosing the schedule button on the top right of the page. This will take you to the calendar where you can hopefully find a time that works for both of us. If it feels like a match, then we’ll schedule a full session. If you prefer, you can start with a full session by using the “Schedule” button at the top of each page.
How long do spiritual direction sessions last?
Sessions typically last for one hour. Longer sessions may be scheduled if needed.
How frequently do I schedule sessions?
Everyone finds their own rhythm. However the usual pattern is monthly. Occasionally people meet more frequently during challenging seasons of life or important times of discernment.
What do I need to prepare in advance for spiritual direction?
It is helpful to set aside a little time for individual reflection before the session begins so you have an idea of the themes, concerns, insights, and questions you have with respect to your spiritual journey. However, this is not absolutely necessary. New themes and insight often emerge through the course of prayer, contemplation, and conversation.
How long has spiritual direction been a spiritual practice?
Spiritual direction has a long history. We can’t really say when it began because it has been practiced for as long as individuals have formally worked with trusted guides to seek spiritual depth. In the Christian tradition, the practice can be traced to the 200’s AD. That’s when people we now refer to as the desert fathers and mothers moved into the wilderness to practice their own faith and became sought after as wise guides to others. Spiritual Direction has remained a practice over the course of centuries, sometimes almost entirely within monastic communities, and sometimes more widely offered.
Is Spiritual Direction Confidential?
Yes – but only to the extent allowed by law. Spiritual directors, like pastors and professional counselors, are required to report if they believe a person they are working with poses an imminent danger to themselves or others.
How much does spiritual direction cost?
The first 30 minute “meetme” session is complementary so we can get to know each other before getting started. The ongoing fee is $50 per session. However, I sometimes offer lower fees for special circumstances such as student and beginning pastors. I hope that cost will not be a barrier.
